Sound Sculptures

Spark curiosity through sound, shape, and sensory play.

Concept:

Create a small sculpture that makes an interesting sound when tapped, shaken, or moved.

Time: 10-12 minutes

Materials (per pair or small group)

  • 3 plastic or paper cups (or small containers)
  • 4 rubber bands
  • 1 paper straw
  • 1 spoon or stick for testing sound

Instructions

  1. The Challenge: Use the materials to build a sculpture that produces sound. It could rattle, bounce, hum, or chime—get creative!
  2. Design & Build: (6-8 minutes) Stack, stretch, and attach materials to explore how different shapes and tensions create sound.
  3. Test & Tweak: (2-3 minutes): Tap or move your sculpture to listen to what it creates. Adjust for more or less sound.
  4. Reflect: (1-2 minutes): What kind of sound did your sculpture make? What design choices made it louder or softer?
